Kat Austen’s artistic practice focuses on environmental issues. She combines disciplines and media, creating sculptural and new media installations, performances and participatory works. Austen’s practice is informed by extensive research and theory, and is motivated to explore how to move towards a more socially and environmentally just future. Austen, who works from her Berlin studio, is currently an artist-in-residence at the School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at University College London (UCL), a senior lecturer at UCL Arts and Sciences and an associate artist at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies at Potsdam. Her studio hosts two scientists in residence through Ars Electronica’s STUDIOTOPIA program. In February 2022, Austen was awarded the STAR+T+S Repairing the Future grant to develop, in collaboration with Fara Peluso, an algae-based alternative to vinyl. Additionally, Austen received funding from the NEUSTART Kultur project. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Austen has exhibited at the Contemporary Museum in Wrocław, Bonhams Art Gallery in London, the Polar Museum in Cambridge, the Künsthalle in Rostock and the Kuehlhaus in Berlin, among others, and her work is in public and private collections around the world. world. She has performed around the world, including at Opera North in Leeds, the Fusion Festival in Berlin and the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
